Arts

Department Message

The regular Visual Art program at Nepean High School begins in grade 9  with basic skill building in drawing, painting and sculpture. Senior students explore their own themes and create a body of work demonstrating their personal approach. Specialized courses include a Portfolio class in grade 11 and 12  which prepares students for continuing their studies at Post Secondary institutions.  Many of our Art students enter the city-wide "Young at Art" juried show each spring.

Drama

Drama Department's Message

The junior dramatic arts program fosters personal development, confidence, risk-taking, creativity, and collaboration as students develop skills in dramatic foundations. The senior program continues the theme of personal development as students work with a variety of dramatic texts and forms from various cultures, and create and perform original works on a variety of topics and themes. Theatre Production functions as a theatre company and is multi-grade level. NHS is well known for its extra curricular theatrical productions.  We annually offer a main stage show, Children’s Theatre, a Canadian Improv Games competitive team, and Shakespeare on the Platform.

Music

Music Department's Message

Instrumental music consists of the in-the-timetable music classes (AMU courses), in conjunction with the outside-the-timetable concert bands, where students apply what they have learned in the music class (AMR courses). The Vocal music program  provides a space for singers to develop their voices in a choral setting. In addition, there are two bands which students may audition for: an extra-curricular Jr. Jazz Band, and a Senior Stage Band (AMH courses). Vocal students seeking enrichment may audition for the extra-curricular Chamber Choir. All music ensembles perform regularly in the school and the larger community, and take local, national, and international trips.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts Department's Message

The NHS Arts Department is vibrant and thriving.  With four different disciplines (Dramatic Art, Music, and Visual Art) there are multiple opportunities for creative and personal development.  Students are encouraged to study more than one discipline in their time at NHS, or to specialize in several pathways within one discipline. In addition to strong curricular programming, each of the Arts offers rich extra-curricular opportunities such as performances, workshops with professional artists, field trips, theatrical productions, and cultural tours.
