Principal's Message

Welcome to the Nepean High School website! As you read through the pages of this site, you will learn about our students, our school, and get a feel for the tradition and commitment to excellence that defines the Nepean community. Nepean opened in 1922 as Westboro High School under the leadership of our first principal, Mr. Percy Daniels. In 1932, students and staff committed a plaque to his memory which remains in our front entry to this day. In part, it reads: “Not in achievement alone, but in the inspiration of noble character, lay his success.” Following our earliest traditions, Nepean has served the ideals of high academic achievement and developing students of character for almost a century.

At NHS we charge our students with 3 tasks. Firstly, to follow our school mission: Love Purple; Live Gold! In this we mean that we expect our students to love their days at NHS and to work with passion. We expect them to contribute positively to the lives of others. We see passion and service to others as critical steps in achieving excellence. Secondly, we challenge our students to Leave a Legacy! Many of our most successful initiatives from charity events to community fundraising at Nepean are student-led projects which have created a legacy of service and achievement. Finally, we expect that all members of the Nepean community will respect everybody, every day, all of the time.

Our current School Learning Plan is designed to foster the achievement of all students. We are currently focusing in four key areas, which include:

  1. Ensuring all students are well educated regarding their options for post-secondary pathways including employment, apprenticeships, training, college and university
  2. Ensuring full credit accumulation of all students with a focus on supporting boys, particularly in the first two years of high school
  3. Growing our cultural proficiency within our student leadership initiatives and classroom pedagogy to meet learning needs of our diverse community
  4. Promoting a culture of learning and instruction with all members of the Nepean community that puts learning first in our pedagogical and operational decision making

Our staff and students have also continued our tradition of strong leadership programs and Knights of Character initiatives. Some of our current initiatives include:

  1. A very active and open GSA Gender and Sexuality Alliance team promoting positive values, inclusion and appreciation for the power of diversity. Nepean is home for students and staff of all gender expression and orientations
  2. A Man-Up group was formed in 2014 and is continuing to grow and provide positive, pro-social leadership to the men of Nepean through leadership and educational forums.
  3. In February, we will be holding events to educate our students and discuss current issues by celebrating Black History Month at Nepean. A group of committed students and staff will be planning our recognition of the many contributions black students, leaders and educators have made to Canadian and world culture.
  4. This year, over 70 NHS students completed Sources of Strength training. This program, which is new to Nepean, exists to provide the highest quality evidence-based prevention for suicide, violence, bullying and substance abuse by training, supporting, and empowering both peer leaders and caring adults to impact their world through the power of connection, hope, help and strength.

As you navigate around our website, you will see more pages which include information from our Students’ Council & our School Council, as well as overviews of our programs in Academics, Fine Arts and Athletics. Each of these pages will tell you about the teams, bands, clubs and programs that exist to promote our students’ leadership and personal development. These opportunities add value to the learning experience and complement our core academic programs. Thank you for taking time to visit our site. We look forward to welcoming you to Nepean in the future.

Love Purple; Live Gold!
