Welcome Back!

Welcome Back!
Posted on 09/08/2021

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians of the NHS Learning Community,

The Staff of Nepean High School are very excited to welcome students and staff back to school on Thursday, September 9th and if you are new to Nepean High School, we are pleased to have you join our school learning community.

It has been a while since we have been at school together. The start of this school year will be a big transition for all of us. Parents might be interested in these resources to support students return to school produced by School Mental Health Ontario and KidsHelpPhone.

At the school, we have been busy preparing for the safe return of our students. Building on our safety practices last year, we have made some adjustments to the school entrance ways, hallway access and classrooms to optimize safety and learning. Here are few things you should know:

Entrance to Nepean High School

Students will be required to enter and exit the school through a designated door to minimize contact between students.

Designated Entry and Exit Doors By Grade

Grade Nine Students – please use Entrance A or Entrance B (Middle doors off of Broadview Avenue)

Grade Ten Students – please use Entrance I – (Entrance on the West side of the school, by the Main Gym)

Grade Eleven Students –please use Entrance  C (South East door off of Broadview Avenue)

Grade Twelve Students – please use Entrance  N  (North East door off of Broadview Avenue)

Students will be required to hand sanitize upon entering and exiting the building.

Students and Staff will be required to wear masks indoors at all times.

Daily Timetable

Our daily timetable is as follows:

9:05 AM -11:35 AM  1st Period (Block A or Block C depending on the week)

11:35AM - 12:35 PM Lunch

12:35 PM - 3:05 PM 2nd Period (Block B or Block D depending on the week)

Please note: Students with spares and e-learning courses must leave the building and work from home during that period.

Schedule for September.

September 9th and 10th

Block A  - AM Period

Block B - PM Period

September 13th - 17th

Block C  - AM Period

Block D - PM Period

September 20th - 24th

Block A  - AM Period

Block B - PM Period

September 27th - October 1st

Block C  - AM Period

NHS students will have a period to eat lunch.  Students will be able to leave the building for lunch but once they leave the building they must stay out for the entire lunch period to limit contacts.

There will be no food service provided by the cafeteria, and food delivery services will not have access to school property, so students should bring lunch if they are staying.

Students who choose to remain in the school for lunch will be assigned a designated area by grade to eat lunch to minimize contact between students.  The designated areas are as follows:

Grade 9 students - Cafeteria

Grade 10 students - Main Gym

Grade 11 Students - 3rd Floor Hall

Grade 12 students - School Library

Health and safety

Together, we can prevent the spread of COVID-19 by following health and safety protocols.

  • Daily Screening -please ensure to screen your child for symptoms every morning before school and ensure they stay home if they have symptoms.

  • Masks are mandatory this year for all students indoors (kindergarten to grade 12) and recommended when outdoors.

  • Hand hygiene - all students and staff will sanitize their hands each time they go in and out of the school and the classroom.

  • Cohorts and Social Distancing - Students will be grouped in cohorts and will be practicing physical distancing inside the school and in the yard.

  • Vaccines - Parents and eligible students are encouraged to follow public health advice and get a vaccine. The Ottawa Public Health vaccine page offers useful information for families. The OCDSB has made vaccines mandatory for all employees. You can learn more here.

  • Visitors and Volunteers - access to school buildings is restricted to students and staff only.

As part of our COVID-19 response, the OCDSB has invested millions of dollars in upgrades to ventilation systems. The OCDSB ventilation webpage has detailed  information on actions taken across the district. You can find school-specific details using the links at the bottom of the page.

Traffic Safety

With more parents dropping their children at Nepean High School and schools nearby, traffic safety is more important than ever. Please remind your child about traffic safety when walking or biking to school.
